A well-laid slate roof can last longer than any of us will own the house. Somebody else will repair it, and the hardest part of their job will be matching what is there.
What goes in the record
The quarry, the color and the lot; the slate size, thickness and exposure; the nail and the flashing metals; and a drawing of every valley, hip and penetration.
Attic stock
We order a few percent over and leave the extra in a labelled crate in the attic, from the same lot as the roof. A broken slate in ten years is replaced with one from the same day in the quarry.
